The best food for Pancreatitis:
The pancreas is a small organ in the abdomen which is responsible for releasing three important enzymes that digest food.
- AMYLASE ENZYME which helps to digest starch
- PROTEASE ENZYME which helps to digest protein
- LIPASE ENZYME which helps to digest fats
Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed, and the symptoms appeared when 90% of the cells in pancreas are damaged.
Pancreatitis can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from relatively mild signs like a reduced appetite to very severe illness such as multiple organ failure. The most common symptoms of pancreatitis include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
There is no specific cure for pancreatitis, fortunately though most dogs recover with appropriate supportive treatment.
Dietary Management
Dogs suffering from Pancreatitis need dietary treatment which specifically facilitate digestion.
- Dogs should only eat food made from highly digestible formulas
- Food should be high in protein and low in fat and fibre
- Owners should feed smaller portions of food and serve several meals per day rather than one or two large meals
- Feeding rate should be more than normal – look to feed 150% of what the dog normally would require until the body replenishes.
- In severe cases one can add commercial coated enzymes that are available online
