How to choose the best food for a Senior Cat

by admin May 4, 2021 No Comments

It can be hard to know when exactly to transition your cat from Adult to senior food. However what we do know is that cats go from the adult stage to the senior stage in life at around 8 years old, so we use this as the benchmark for when best to start changing food.

A key thing to note is that cat’s energy requirements don’t reduce by much as they get older. However, senior cats can be less able to break down fat and protein in their food and often have less sense of taste and smell which can mean they struggle to get enough nutrients from their food. Senior cats need a product that is more easily digestible and contain a balance of nutrients.

Senior cats can start to struggle with dental problems which can affect their ability to eat their usual diet. If you notice any changes in your cats eating behaviour such as growling when eating, not chewing and swallowing foods whole, eating to one side of the mouth, dropping food or leaving their food, or any weight loss – We advise contacting your local veterinarian!

The best food for a Senior Cat –

Lynx Senior

Grain-free dry food for cats

  • Highly digestible with carefully selected ingredients. Potato is a highly digestible energy source and is a gluten-free ingredient.
  • Taurine is an essential amino acid that cats don’t produce themselves, it supports eye health and a healthy heart
  • Chondroitin and glucosamine are components of the cartilage in the joints; these substances support the cartilage for supple joints.
  • High protein content helps maintain muscle mass.
  • Low-carbohydrate diets are highly digestible and promote health due to their low glycemic index.

Wet Food is also recommended

It is important to feed your cat wet food 2-3 times per week, this helps to reduce the risk of kidney issues that your cat may develop as it reaches seniority.

Senior Cat | Chicken & Turkey Chunks

This is a complete feed for senior cats and is a wet food we recommend highly to owners of senior cats. It’s oven-cooked and seasoned with delicious gravy, without artificial colourant or preservatives.
